Doris Matsui is a Democrat who represents California's 6th congressional district in the U.S. House, serving since 2005. Doris was born in 1944 in an internment camp in Poston, Arizona, and grew up in California's Central Valley. She received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. When her husband Bob Matsui was elected to Congress, Doris moved with the family to Washington D.C. She was a volunteer on Bill Clinton's presidential campaign. Matsui served on Clinton’s transition team. She was appointed deputy special assistant to the president and served in the White House from 1993 to 1998. When her husband, Congressman Bob Matsui, died in 2005, Doris Matsui decided to run for his open seat. She was elected to a full term in 2006 and has been reelected four more times. She served as parliamentarian at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. As a Congresswoman she was appointed to the Committee on Energy and Commerce. Matsui favors full disclosure of campaign finances for politicians and desires fairer elections, including extending election periods. She is pro-choice and is endorsed by NARAL. Matsui supports the Clean Water Act to seek cleaner beaches, lakes, and other bodies of water. She voted to allow the EPA to regulate greenhouse gases and supports allowing individual states to create stricter emission standards than the federal government. She opposes moves to privatize Social Security or allow citizens to substitute alternative retirement funds. She has expressed support for protecting the whistleblowers' identity. Doris has one son and two grandchildren.
